“Car Race of the Year 2001”
For PC-8001
By 大村一也 (Kazuya Oomura)
When you say 2001, the conversation usually turns to a journey into space. It was a collaboration between Stanley Kubrick and [Arthur C.] Clarke, and what a beautiful film it was. The plot doesn’t matter, since nobody can really understand it anyway. I bet even the creators themselves didn’t fully understand it, that thing.
Anyway, changing the subject completely, this game is quite beautiful. And the program is short, too. While it’s fine to use up every last bit of a short program’s limits, it’s also fun to see just how short of a program you can make a game with.
(How to Play the Game)
In the year 2001, you get in your car and start a race. While dodging UFOs and other obstacles, let’s see how high a score you can get.
(Keys Used)
Numpad 1 – Move left
Numpad 2 – Move down
Numpad 3 – Move right
Numpad 5 – Move up
Your car is the “✛” symbol. Well, it’s a very pragmatic character design, isn’t it? Use the 1, 2, 3, and 5 keys on the numeric keypad (tenkey) to control your car and drive. Various kinds of obstacles will appear. There are UFOs (○) that come plunging down, things that look like houses, and so on……. Even if you change lanes, the UFO will follow you to some extent, so when a UFO appears, if you don’t dodge it skillfully, ZUGAAAN… it’s game over.
